Kill or be Killed

nightfirebp5An article in the February issue of the journal Emotion presents some strange findings regarding players' emotional reactions to killing and being killed in a first-person shooter (FPS). In the experiment, a group of students played James Bond 007: Nightfire (Super Monkey Ball II was used as a control) while their facial expressions and physiological activity were tracked and recorded moment-to-moment via electrodes and various other monitoring equipment. Conventional FPS wisdom would suggest that players like shooting enemies and dislike getting shot. The research findings, however, paint a different picture.

From the article: "instead of joy resulting from victory and success, wounding and killing the opponent elicited anxiety, anger, or both." In addition, "death of the player's own character...appear[s] to increase some aspects of positive emotion." This latter finding the authors believe may result from the temporary "relief from engagement" brought about by character death. Whatever the underlying basis, however, the results seem highly counterintuitive.

A recent update with windows has left several windows vista users with an endless Stage 3 of 3 error. Microsoft has not yet corrected the error with windows update and is leaving many of its users to watch as their computers endlessly boot loop. There is a workaround that has repaired and thus allowed users to gain access again to their desktops. You can system restore to a previous point and this allows you to get back into windows.

Here is the workaround for those of you not familiar with computer repair.

Whats with journalist that have no clue what they are talking about but will decide to write an article about how horrible gaming is? Just from reading a few paragraphs you can tell the journalist has no clue what she is talking about from quotes of learning that WII is pronounced "we" not "why" and "purchasing a console that has the ability to play blueray whatever that is".

Click the article below to read.  Or here for the link of the full size jpg.

"Brigitte Pellerin is a thirty-something apprentice tte carre who has left Montreal for the excitement of living in the nation's capital.

In addition to writing columns for the Gazette and the Ottawa Citizen, she is part of a husband-and-wife team hosting a daily public-affairs radio show on News Talk Radio 580 CFRA in Ottawa. She plays the wife.

She earned a law degree from Universit Laval in Quebec City but insists she can still be a nice person when the mood strikes. She spends her spare time failing to keep houseplants alive."

Maybe someone should write an article how much of a waste of time it is to grow houseplants.

Microsoft leaves HD DVD behind
Written by Stehil

xbox_hd_dvdMicrosoft has announced that due to “recent decisions Toshiba, Hollywood studios, and retailers” they plan withdraw from the HD DVD market.

John Porcaro on the Gamer Score Blog stated that “Xbox will no longer manufacture new HD DVD players for the Xbox 360, but we will continue to provide standard product and warranty support for all Xbox 360 HD DVD Players in the market.

This is a pretty good kick to the nuts while HD is down already as Toshiba pulled out of the HD DVD playback market to which most people are seeing as heralding in the Triumph of Blu Ray.

P.S. - On a side note Microsoft is now unloading the rest of its remaining stock for $50 a pop and I’ve confirmed that from Best Buy.
P.P.S. – But thats only if your in the states, Best Buy and all you other big American companies still enjoy bending us Canadians over. Still $130 at time of publication.

Creating a little Havok

havokIf free indie games are not interesting enough for you, they are about to get a whole lot crazier. Havok has announced that they will make their physics and animation engine, found in many AAA games, available to non-commercial developers for free. If you have a Mac, however, you are left out in the cold. The PC tools will be the only tool set available for free. Hopefully this move will foster more creativity in the gaming industry.

Havok has also unveiled two new software packages, Havok Cloth and Havok Destructions. These products will provided developers with a better means to control interactive cloth and destructible objects. While the main engine will be free, you can expect these to cost an arm and a leg.
