ATI: The Big Bang for your bucks theory
Written by MasterPain

nvidia-vs-atiNvidia and ATI have been at war for a long time to be the one that gets the performance crown and your hard earned money. Nvidia might still have the performance crown for now but ATI is not done and just came back with 2 new cards, the Radeon 4850 and the 4870.

These new cards from ATI are aimed for the gamers who wants high end performance without having to shell out insane amount of money for it. At a MSRP of 200$ for the 4850 and 300$ for the 4870, these cards are dealing a heavy blow to the green giant who has been for a long time using his performance crown to charge a hefty premium for gamers who wants high end FPS.
The 4850 and the 4870 are much alike in terms of features, they have a single GPU based on the 55nm RV770 chipset and both cards have 965 millions transistors, 800 stream processing units and 40 texture units all on a 256-bit bus. The differences between the 2 cards are on clock speeds and memory, the 4850 is a single slot card with GDDR3 memory clocked at 625/1000Mhz (1986Mbps) and the 4870 got a dual slot cooler on it with GDDR5 memory clocked at 750/1800Mhz (3.6Gbps).
The 4850 performs pretty much the same as the 9800 GTX from Nvidia while the 4870 brings the war to the GTX 260 and sometimes outperforms it. Now its up to you to chose which brand you will get for your next video card, but thanks to ATI, gamers on a budget are now getting more for their money.

Cell Phone Watch Debuts

cell-phone-watchj-o-106980-1For all of you Dick Tracy fans your time has finally come.  No you won't be fighting extremely comical bad guys with clichéd names.  You can however be the first to own the cell phone watch.  That's right, now you can finally mock all those Iphone people with something that can rival its innovation.

The cell phone watch comes with all the regular features including mp3 playback, supports sms and mms, and a voice recorder.  It also has a 1.3mb camera.  Some people complain about the camera as it is awkward to use and it increases the weight of the watch.

For those of you that don't want to talk to your wrist don't worry.  It supports the majority of blue tooth devices.  Designers of the watch said they expect everyone to be using Bluetooth devices to communicate with the watch phone.  The phone does come in at 80 to 120 grams of weight.  It's definitely got some weight to it compared to normal phones.  But to all those Dick Tracy fans, it will be worth the weight.

Automatic Mario Masterpiece

Wow. Just Wow. This thing must of taken months to accomplish. For those of you who aren't familiar with the idea behind automatic mario they're custom Super Mario World levels that end up playing themselves through the use of bounce blocks. Joystiq has compiled a small collection of some of them, you can find them here. Then they sinked automatic mario to anime music

Then this video was released. Not only is it a 11 minute long anime music mash-up (or I suppose medley is probably the more correct term) that is not only synced with the music but uses the in-game sound effects to compliment it. Turn up your volume and spend the next 11 minutes doing what I did, sitting back, mouth open, and thinking this is bloody awesome.

"The jDome is a viewing device for getting a better field of vision from your PC and immersing gamers into their games. Focused on PC gaming, it uses a simple projector to stretch the image to a full 180 degree view of the gaming environment." Seems cool, but who wants to stand for hours playing their favorite game?   The design seems simple and unique and I imagine it would be very immersive.    We'll see if this ever gets to the consumer market.  Good luck Swedish inventor  dude!

Our Admin QwertyAccess helps build winning robot

thumb_hbi-robotOur game server admin QwertyAccess has been afk for a while and we now find out why.  He has been working with a team of his peers in school to build an amazing robot called "The Game" in an international competition to collect tennis balls and deposit them into a bridge.  Out of 91 teams from across the world, they placed second.  Here is a list of competing teams and a short video of the competition.  Check out their winning robot in the image on the left.  Qwerty is the one holding the Robot.

The cool thing about it is how they built their robot to be defensive and knock out balls from the other robots.   This really upset the other teams who got pretty mad and the judges called it "de-scoring" your opponent.

Congratulations QwertyAccess!
