A group of rocketeer's from California has built a 21 foot long model of the famous X-Wing fighter from the Star Wars franchise. The only catch, its not a model. The 21 foot long, 19 foot wide X Wing was actually constructed with the purpose of flying. Armed with radio controlled wings, a few solid fuel rockets and an R2 droid, these nerds mean business. Want to build your own? Apparently all you need is CAD, some wood, aluminum, a laser cutter and handful of class M rockets. That, and a replica of R2-D2 of course. Gizmodo has the full story and a nice picture gallery also.
Now don't get your hopes up yet. While this is an amazing feat, and a freakin' awesome idea, the X Wing didn't exactly have a successful flight. Saying the shuttle blew up mid flight is being a little generous. The X Wing only actually was flying in tact for about two seconds. Followed by all four wings being ripped off and you can kind of guess the rest. Gizmodo also has a video showing the flight from start to explode . I only hope that R2 made it out alive.
