 Few
games have been able to captivate audiences for so long. Final fantasy
7 is one of those games. This game has already spawned 2 cell phone
games, FF7: Before Crisis(not yet released in America) and Dirge of
Cerberus: Lost episode, a movie, Advent Children, a spin-off game,
Dirge of Cerberus, an OVA, Last Order, and even a supposed remake of
the game that started it all. . Now, fans get to play Zack Fair's part
of the story. This is the Crisis Core. Crisis Core takes place 7
years before the start of Final Fantasy 7. Zack Fair is a 3rd class
SOLIDER. For reference's sake, Sephiroth is a 1st class SOLIDER. He is
dropped onto a train and brought into a station at a Mako Reactor. This
begins the simple tutorial that seems to start almost every single
game. After some running around and battling, you find out that Zack
was in a virtual reality. His role model, Angeal, a 1st class SOLIDER,
saves him from the enemies in the virtual reality. For some reason, the
virtual reality in Shinra is really advance and you can actually get
severely wounded. The story evolves with all sorts of characters from
the original game appearing throughout the storyline. I really don't
want to reveal too much, it is just so good! Read More if you must!
Anyway, this game is
excellent. The battle system is completely different from the other
games. This is all real-time. You are given a basic Attack command, 6
materia slots, and an Item section. To move around that menu, you use
the shoulder buttons. A lot of the spells from CC's predecessors make
appearances, too. The base spells, fire, blizzard, thunder, and cure,
are there, but other spells like Wall(Increase Physical and Magical
defense), Drain, Osmose(Drain MP), and Ultima(THE strongest spell),
among other appear. The strengths of the spells are still determined by
the suffixes, -ara and -aga. Normally spelled, the spell is at its
first level. -Ara means that it is stronger than level 1, and -aga
means that it is stronger than level 1 and level 2. New types of spells
also come into play. For example, Hell Thundaga preforms the move
Thundaga while creating a status effect for the enemy. There are also
abilities in the form of materia, such as Assault twister(Spin move for
2 hits, can get a status effect added later), Jump(High Jump is the
next level, and it also comes with status effects), and various
elemental attacks. There are also some stat boosting materia.
Now
for the fun part, the Digital Mind Wave! The Digital Mind Wave, or DMW,
is the main component of the battle system. The DMW is essential a 6
reel slot machine. 3 reels are numbers, 1 to 9, and the other 3 are
characters. In order to explain this, I will name the number reels 1n,
2n, 3n, and name the characters reels 1c, 2c, 3c.These reels are read
from left to right as they would be on the screen. Certain things
happen when you get combinations of numbers in the number reels. For
example, 777 in the slot machine gets you invincibility. However, after
getting the same characters in 1c and 3c, it becomes a “Modulating
Phase”. The Modulating Phase is when your limit breaks, summons, and
leveling occur. This reel still has the number reels but here, 777 lets
Zack level up. Pairs or trios of numbers in the other reels leads to
the leveling of your materia.
There is way too much to say about
this game. I highly recommend this game to anyone, fan or not. There
are so many twists and turns in this game that the storyline becomes
hard to follow. The game does have a few short-comings, like the way to
level up. It is not random but there is a hidden exp counter that
increases the likelihood of getting the 777 in the Modulating Phase. I
give this game a 4.5 out of 5.
