Introduction:
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriot, the forth and possibly
the last installment in the series. A PlayStation 3 exclusive game,
released June 12, 2008. But before the actual game release, a Beta test
was given to those who reserved it to the new online game play, Metal
Gear Online. As for the story it takes place after the previous Metal
gear solids, hence Snake looking so old. The story goes as a new war
being caused from his brother slash clone, Liquid. Using a new program
called “Guns of the Patriot” which uses a next generation
nanotechnology injected into many soldiers. With the nanotechnology, it improvised the modern soldier to be some what like a “Super soldier”
allowing information to be send to and from one another and to high up
officials. Which Liquid has taken advantage of, and plans on using to
make a “New world”. That is were Snake comes in, he is called forth
once again to help man kind.
Game play:
Game play for MGS4, is very solid, controls are easy to learn quick for
new comers to the series. As for the style, it’s a change from the
traditional fixed camera, and goes to a third person shooter style.
Much like how Resident Evil went with RE4. But game play stays true;
it’s a stealth action game. In which snake gets his Octocamo.
The
Octocamo is a specially designed suit made by Otocon, snakes old
friend, which allows Snake to blend in with anything around him, much
like an Octopus in which it got its name. Game play time can range from
5 hours up to 30+ depending on how you go about it. Replay value is
moderate as for MGS4 has interpreted its own “Achievement” awards in
the form of emblems. If you want to get all of them, then you will have
to play a few times over. AI within the game is very solid. Higher
difficulties are show the level of the AI, higher levels go with how
well they work with their “Sons of the Patriot” or SOP for short, which
is the nanotech that is used. In short, you shoot someone; you will
have a small squad rush to the location the person has died. Boss
battles are very unique, with the introduction to The Beauty and the
Beast Corps. Four women who have post –traumatic stress disorder, are
turned into war machines used by Liquid.
Online Game play:
Another side to the game play is the online feature included with the
title, Metal Gear Online, a revise from Metal Gear Sustenance. Game
play is like a cross blend of Halo 3, and Call of Duty 4. With a range
of 2-16 players per game, It implements skill level which is determined
on how well you do, and is used for auto match making. You are also
given skills, a wide variety to choose from to help you within the
game. Weather it would be for better accuracy and reloading, t o faster
movement or a system to help you locate enemies and their traps. Game
modes include your standard death match, team death match, capture the
flag based mode, and defend attack. But with those is a couple of more
interesting mode, which apply game style from the actual MGS4. Which
include Sneaking mission, where its like team death match, but one
random player plays as Snake, who needs to sneak around and collect
three dog tags to win a game, while the other two teams fight each
other while trying to hunt snake. When a game reaches 12 players,
another player is randomly picked to become Mk. II ( made by Otocon,
and used in the main game ) who can help knock out people to make it a
little easier for Snake. And the last game play mode is Team Sneaking.
One team is equipped with a stealth device which makes them virtually
invisible, excluding any weapons they are holding. For them to win they
have to capture the objective, or knock out/ take out opposing team.
While the defending team has to defend the objective until time runs
out or defeat everyone on the opposing team.
Overall:
Main game is a beautiful continuation of the series, game play is
repeatable, story line is awesome, and graphics are stunning. Online
game play is just as addictive as any other shooter game. For all
PlayStation 3 owners I would say this is a MUST GET game for your
library. If you are planning to get a PlayStation 3, you must get this
game.
My over all rating: 5/5
